Speak Up about Your Skills, Talents and Expertise

Written by Uyoyou Christiana Charles-Iyoha

There is wisdom in speaking up about your skills, talents and expertise. It is akin to marketing and advertising your skills. It is biblical to sell – 2nd Kings Chapter 4 verse 7. Elisha instructed the indebted prophet’s widow to sell the oil. It was not to be given away as freebies.

The virtuous woman sold the linen garments she produced – she also supplied sashes to the merchants. It is therefore not a sin to sell expertise, knowledge resources, skills, other products and services. Lydia was a seller of purple - Acts Chapter 16 verse 14.

Even the business of trading in knowledge resources, skills, expertise and ideas, talents for money, fame, power, position is not new. The Biblical Joseph, Jacob, and Daniel are classic examples. Jacob traded time and his knowledge of shepherding flocks for board, wives and later his own flock – serving to become a master. Joseph and Daniel traded in their expertise and God given wisdom to become globally respected leaders who earned big time money. These two men served in empires that were world leaders who ruled the world and controlled the economies of the world. And despite being slaves and captives of war, they rose to the pinnacle of global leadership through the mercy and favor of God using their God given IPs.
Joseph told the butler and the baker that God would give him the interpretations of their dreams and God did. Joseph interpreted their dreams. Though it took two years before Joseph was eventually linked to Pharaoh, the significant point here is that Joseph spoke up about his talent and expertise, implemented and the results spoke for him two years later. Please see Genesis Chapter 40.

Joseph advertised his ability to interpret dreams by interpreting the dreams of the butler and baker – Genesis Chapter 40 verses 1 to 23. He also requested that the butler should advertise him to Pharaoh. Though the butler forgot to do so, God orchestrated circumstances in such a way that the butler was forced to remember Joseph and mention Joseph’s skills and expertise to Pharaoh – Genesis Chapter 41. And when Joseph was brought before Pharaoh, he created a job for himself through the solutions he proffered after interpreting the dreams of Pharaoh – verses 32 to 44. Pharaoh and his court could not think of someone wiser or more discerning than Joseph to handle the situation so Joseph was appointed Prime Minister in Egypt.

David spoke up about his ability to take on anyone and anything in battle irrespective of size and expertise. Consequently, he was allowed to take on Goliath, and true to his talk, Goliath was cut down by David. That gave him a place in Saul’s army and God gave David victory wherever he went. Please see 1st Samuel Chapter 17. God made David famous as a warrior and nations around him and Israel were conquered, subdued, became his servants and brought tribute. Additionally, their gold, silver, bronze and other articles of economic value were taken as spoils of war and dedicated to God. Please see 1st Chronicles Chapter 18 verses 1 to 17, 14 verse 7.

Beloved, speak up about your skills and expertise wheever the opportunity to do so presents itself. You never can tell who you are sepaking to and what heights it will take you to. See you soon at Success Street. Shalom.
