The Consequences of Ignorance

Written by Uyoyou Christiana Charles-Iyoha

The consequences of ignorance are better not imagined. While education is said to be expensive, ignorance is even more expensive considering the unpleasant consequences of ignorance. Some of them are:

Captivity which occurs because an ignorant person or persons lack direction and lack of direction leads to captivity as in the case of the Israelites described in Isaiah Chapter 5 verse 13. They had no idea where to go and even if they had an idea of where to go, they had absolutely no idea how to get there and they ended up in captivity.

Hunger – even the honorable men amongst them who ideally should have had abundance suffered hunger because there was no food for them. Beloved, can you imagine what the commoners would suffer if their honorable men suffered hunger? Famine! This is to say that famine can be occasioned by ignorance.
Thirst – the multitude of the people lacking knowledge were dried up with thirst because there was no water. It is said that water is life because the body requires water to survive; significantly, the earth and other living things aside of human beings also require water to survive and flourish. Without water, the earth becomes dried up, unable to support any form of agriculture. Plants and animals also dry up and if there is no urgent response to provide water, they dry up and die. In like manner, humans suffer dehydration and if the situation is not quickly remedied, death occurs. Water is therefore very crucial to human existence and when ignorance leads to a situation where there is no access to water, death and should I say progressive annihilation occurs.

Water is not only physical. Water also refers to the word of God. Please see Ephesians Chapter 5 verse 26 and 1st John Chapter 5 verse 8. Ignorance of the word of God coupled with lack of understanding of the word of God can lead to untimely death as in the case of the young man described in Proverbs Chapters 7 verses 1 to 27, 5 verses 1 to 14. This is because ignorance as well as lack of understanding of the word of God can lead to sinful actions and utterances which if not immediately repented of lead to untimely death. It can also lead to foolish actions which lead to poverty. The young man described in Proverbs Chapter 24 verses 30 to 34 spent the time allocated to him by God in a little sleep, a little slumber and a little folding of the hands to rest instead of investing the time in caring for his God given vineyard. These foolish actions of the young man made the vineyard unfruitful as it was overgrown with thorns, its surface was covered with nettles and its stone wall was broken down culminating in loss of crops and zero harvest and ultimately lack and poverty.

Ignorance of and lack of understanding of the word of God can also lead to death as experienced by the Israelites described in Hosea Chapter 4 verse 6. Their lack of knowledge and understanding of the word of God led to their destruction. Ignorance is deadly and should be avoided at all costs. As much as possible, engage yourself in activities that enhance your knowledge base and bank. Also invest in quality relationships that help to strengthen your knowledge base and bank.    All of these will speed up your journey to Success Street. See you there soon. Shalom.
