Characteristics of the Blind Man
The blind man who sat by the road begging was
positively inquisitive and asked the right questions. Please see verse 36 of
Luke Chapter 18.
His hearing abilities were top notch. They had been
trained to hear and decipher sounds in order to make the distinction between
the footstep of one person and several persons. He heard a multitude passing
by. His heightened hearing abilities greatly compensated for his visual
impairment. He could therefore make distinctions by and from the sounds he
heard. But he did not stop here. He also put other functional parts of his body
to great use.
He used his voice judiciously to inquire about what
was happening in his immediate and remote surroundings. That probably explains
how he got to know about Jesus and the great miracles Jesus was performing. The
blind man also used his voice to make demands or requests that would bring
about positive transformation to his life. He cried out to Jesus to have mercy
on him and significantly refused to be silenced by the people around him who
urged him to be quiet. The judicious and positive use of his voice made Jesus
pay attention as the Bible records that Jesus stood still and commanded the
blind man to be brought to Him.
Again, the blind man knew what he wanted and was
prepared for the moment. Jesus would not pass by him every day so why not make
the most of the moment – take advantage of the great divine opportunity to
request the restoration of his sight.
Beloved, it is indeed true that when preparedness,
especially great preparedness meets with divine opportunity; great success is
usually the outcome. Some biblical examples include Joseph, Daniel, Nehemiah,
David, the virtuous woman, and many others. The blind man could have requested
for alms, something he probably did everyday but definitely not at this moment
because somehow, the blind man recognized that the Person he was standing
before was greater than alms and had much more than to give to him. Jesus would
give him his sight and with his sight restored, he would live a dignifying life
free of begging for alms. So the blind man asked Jesus to restore his sight and
Jesus willingly and lovingly did.
Beloved, a great lesson from this story is to always
ask for gifts that transform; gifts which take you beyond and above a life of
dependence on people. The blind man would no longer have to ask anyone to lead
him by the hand again to where he used to ask for alms. That was history now.
Also, the blind man listened to and paid attention
to the right information – stories about Jesus and how Jesus was transforming
the lives of people by preaching and teaching the word of God as well as
healing people, saving people and the numerous miracles that He did. Therefore,
when the opportunity came for a divine transformation encounter with Jesus
Christ of Nazareth, Savior, Redeemer, Justifier, Sanctifier, Healer, Miracle
worker, the great Provider, our Defense and Defender, the blind man literally
grabbed the opportunity and received his sight. It is instructive and
significant to pay attention to information which transforms. Such information
always has the capacity to move you up the ladder spiritually, physically,
mentally, financially, materially, etc.
The blind man asked questions; significantly so
empowering questions and every answer received was processed and analyzed for
benefits; and subsequently put to good use. What do you do with information,
especially life transforming information that God blesses you with in His word
and through counsel from other people? The blind man immediately processed the
information of Jesus of Nazareth is passing by and acted promptly by calling
out loudly to Jesus to help him. He did not keep the information in one of the
back shelves of his mind to await another day when Jesus would pass by. He also
did not go with the multitude in his blind and helpless state to hear if Jesus
would actually perform miracles in Jericho as He had done in other places.
Probably then, he would also receive his own miracle. Nor did he wait at his
roadside alms seat for Jesus to return the same way out of Jericho before
asking to receive his sight. The blind man took advantage of the divine
opportunity presented to him instantly. He did not procrastinate by postponing
the encounter with Jesus or making the request to a later date.
He also did not entertain an iota of doubt
concerning Jesus’ ability and willingness to heal him. He believed that Jesus
would make him whole. Significantly, Jesus commended the faith of the blind
man. Beloved, have you heard about Jesus and do you believe that He has you in
mind and His thoughts concerning you are to do you good? If yes, then step out
in faith and be made whole now in the mighty name of Jesus Christ. But if no,
then you are in the right place. Visit a Bible believing Church or better
still, get a copy of the Holy Bible and start reading about Jesus, the Savior
and miracle worker from the book of John. He will not only reveal Himself to
you in His word; He will bring about positive transformation in your life. Stay
with Jesus in His word. Shalom.
