Excellent communication skills open doors of
abundance, influence, position, power and authority to people who have learnt
to communicate excellently whether verbally or written or even through body
language. Excellent communication skills are a total package comprising your
choice of diction, tone, posture, grooming and dressence. All of these take
constant practice as well as conscious effort to implement and improve upon
what has been practiced. It is neither a one off activity nor a sprint.
Nabal is described as a very successful business man
who had acquired considerable wealth and was referred to as very rich. Additionally,
he was married to a very beautiful woman described as someone of good
understanding. Despite all these successes, Nabal lacked communication skills
and was consequently described as harsh and evil in his doings. Please see 1st
Samuel Chapter 25.
His caustic and very demeaning response to the
messengers of David over a simple request to let them partake of his feast from
the shearing activity attest to the fact that he had absolutely no
communication skills. How? A polite no to their request would have been okay
rather than the invectives on David who he referred to as not only a servant
but a breakaway servant from his master and concluded that he would not share
his food with men he did not know where they were from.
David was infuriated when his men reported back
Nabal’s unguarded speech and embarked on a revenge mission that would have
wiped out Nabal and his entire household but for the timely intervention of Abigail,
Nabal’s very beautiful wife.
Significantly, it was not Abigail’s beauty that
saved the day. It was her excellent communication skills borne out of good
understanding. Immediately a servant informed her of what her husband had done
the Bible records that she made haste and took provisions to David and his men.
As if that was not enough, she quickly dismounted from her donkey, fell on her
face before David, bowed to the ground, took on the blame for Nabal’s unguarded
speech, apologized profusely and asked for forgiveness for herself and her
entire household.
Was David’s anger assuaged? To say the least, he was
overwhelmed and thanked God for sending Abigail his way to keep him from
bloodshed and avenging himself. Thereafter, he received the provisions from her
and Abigail returned home. Unfortunately, Nabal died ten days after and when
David heard about Nabal’s death, he thanked God again. But he did something
that further enhanced Abigail’s brand – he proposed marriage to her and Abigail
agreed to marry the future king of Israel, therefore raising her status from
being the wife and widow of wealthy but churlish Nabal to the wife of King
David. Abigail’s excellent communication skills, a function of her good
understanding coupled with her wisdom facilitated her brand enhancement as wife
of King David.
Nabal unfortunately died because he lacked
communication skills, a function of the pride in his heart that made him speak
harshly and arrogantly. I pray that God will teach and help you to communicate
excellently with as many people as you relate with so that your communication
will move you up the ladder of life into success, limelight, relevance, significance,
and dominance in the mighty name of Jesus Christ. See you at Success Stree. Shalom.
